Edit Ok if you want to do completely disable the superdrive without playing with parental control you can do it by unloading the kext file. I opened up my computer and one of the fans next to my disk drive was extremely close to my disk drive's cords. Grr, I hate optical media.

Your HDD will make a clicking noise if it is failing- not grinding. They quoted me a "flat rate depot repair of $310 + tax" to fix it.
