Compressed files can be read faster than uncompressed ones (they are smaller), and on modern machines there should always be enough processor time available to decompress them on the fly. The files that benefit most from compression are things like Microsoft Office files, and these are already compressed as standard when saved in the new Office 2007 and OpenOffice file formats. Don't mess around to much with your computer unless you are ready to face the consequences. Help Please. June 20, 2008 Ben IMHO, "compress old files" is mostly useless, most files which take lots of space (mp3, video, pics) don't compress. Con - when you access those files they need to be decompressed, so access is slower.
